Authenticity & Your Nervous System
The workshop I open Feel Without Fear with. How to tell the difference between what your body is telling you and what is actually true right now.
Your body is giving you information, not instruction.
You know a lot about your nervous system. Probably more than most people in your life. You can name your triggers, your attachment style, the state you’re in, and the childhood that built it.
And still. Somebody’s tone shifts and you’re re-explaining yourself before they’ve finished the sentence. A friend texts we need to talk and your whole afternoon is gone. Someone asks for a little space and your body hears they’re leaving. You go to post the thing, feel resistance, and decide it must not be the right time.
You were told to listen to your body. So you did. And your body said no to a lot of things.
I’ve watched this in close to 1,000 nervous systems. Women learn just enough to know their bodies matter, but never learn to tell a clean signal from a distorted one. So life becomes a padded room, arranged around not getting triggered.
They choose safety, but they’re not free.
Michael Scott drove the car into the lake.
The GPS says turn right, so Michael turns right, immediately, straight into the lake. Dwight is yelling that it means the next intersection. Michael doesn’t check.
That’s what most of us do with our nervous systems. We feel resistance or dread or urgency, and instead of checking it against the moment in front of us, we obey it. My body said no. It’s not safe. It’s not for me.
Your nervous system isn’t the problem. It picked up a real signal. Your body never lies, but it isn’t always telling the truth of this moment. Sometimes it’s taking something that was true a long time ago and laying it right over the person standing in front of you.
You don’t need more regulation. You need to learn to tell a distorted signal from a clear one by checking it against reality.
Why this replaced Nervous System 101
My old Nervous System 101 was a very scientific workshop, heavy on polyvagal theory. It made women very smart about their nervous systems. But in the moment of being triggered, it just doesn’t fucking matter. None of it comes online. So I stopped teaching it that way. This is what I’ve actually watched work. Less academic. More lived.
What we cover
3 movements. What your body is doing, what I’ve learned about how it heals, and what any of it has to do with being yourself. Make a cup of tea, keep the slides open beside you, and pause it as often as you need. It’s dense, in the good way.
What your body is actually doing
The signal and the static.
- The 4 things your nervous system does every time it’s activated: what it believes is happening, how much energy it makes, where that energy goes, and whether it’s allowed out
- Why 3 women can hear we need to talk and have 3 completely different bodies about it
- How old patterns turn into predictions, and why your nervous system only learns through experience
- Clean signal versus distorted signal, and why your body is a radio antenna, not a decision-maker
- What actually makes the signal cleaner, including the lifestyle inflammation nobody wants to look at
What close to 1,000 nervous systems taught me
The patterns.
- Nervous systems heal in slowness. There is no such thing as a reset.
- Relief is not resolution.
- The goal of regulation is not calm. Ever.
- Your nervous system is never stuck. It’s rehearsed.
- A triggered nervous system is not a truthful storyteller.
- It cannot heal in the same environment that made it sick.
Authenticity and your Animal Body
The part that was an edge for me to teach.
- Animal Body and Soul Body: 2 truths in the room, almost always opposite, and neither one gets to outrank the other
- The Authentic Self as the one who listens to both, and then chooses
- How the thing that healed you becomes the rule that traps you
- Why authority and authenticity share a root, and what it means to take both back
- Authenticity as coherence, and what it costs
What it looks like on the other side
Not calm. Not unbothered. Not a woman who never gets triggered again. That woman doesn’t exist, and I’m not her either. It looks more like this.
Their tone shifts and your body still tightens. The difference is you notice it before you start re-explaining yourself. You ask what you believe is happening, and you let them finish the sentence.
You go to post the thing and feel resistance. Instead of calling it intuition, you ask what kind of no it is. Sometimes it really is a no. Sometimes it’s fear it won’t perform, and you post anyway.
The same fight comes around for the 12th time, and instead of arriving with your anger, you say what’s underneath it: I’m scared I’m going to have to do everything myself.
You stop waiting to feel safe before you live your life.
Your body still speaks. You just stop letting it drive.
Fewer of your decisions get made by the version of you who had to survive, and more of them get made by you.
The thing that healed you can become the thing that traps you.
Nervous system language gave you words you never had. Then one day every decision ran through it, and you were waiting to feel safe before you did anything.
Personal responsibility set you free. Then you were responsible for everything, and burned yourself out. Ask me how I know.
Neither of those is wrong. They just got pre-decided, and authenticity can’t be. What was true yesterday, with yesterday’s capacity, might not be true today.
Most of us hand our authority to something outside ourselves. A church, a diet, trauma language, the tarot cards. Even our own nervous system.
Anything can be data. Just don’t let anything outside of you outrank your own knowing.
This is where it gets uncomfortable, because being yourself isn’t free.
If honesty got you punished or your boundaries got you left, authenticity is going to feel expensive and dangerous at first. You won’t always be liked. You will lose people, and it will hurt.
Your body will always experience your authenticity as a risk until you teach it otherwise. This workshop is where you start teaching it.
What this isn’t
- A regulation toolkit. No breathwork script, no 5 steps to calm. Sometimes the most regulated thing your body can do is get louder, cry, shake, or say no.
- Permission to override your body, or instructions to obey it. We’re doing the harder thing in the middle.
What you get
- The full workshop replay, just under 2 hours of teaching
- Recorded live with the 2026 Feel Without Fear cohort
- The full slide deck as a PDF, so you can be present instead of taking notes
- Lifetime access. Watch it once, or every time you catch yourself driving toward the lake.
