I’m not a matriarch yet. I’m 43, and age doesn’t make an elder anyway. But I know I’m growing into something, and I want to do it on purpose.

What kind of elder am I becoming?

An elephant herd is led by its oldest female. Not the strongest. Not the fastest. Probably not even fertile anymore. She leads because she has more memory than anyone else. She knows where the water was during the drought 20 years ago, so she knows where to find it now. She knows where the lions hang out. She remembers where the herd buried its dead.

Herds led by older matriarchs are more likely to survive hard seasons, and they stay calmer under stress.

Her value isn’t her power. It’s her memory, and a nervous system that has seen a lot and survived it. Imagine being the woman who can say to her village, in a drought, you guys, I know where the water is.

A matriarch isn’t calm all the time. She can feel grief without collapsing, get angry without being destructive, and sit in uncertainty without rushing to solve it. She knows when she’s activated, when she’s projecting, and when an old wound is doing the talking. Her nervous system has room for yours.

None of that arrives with age. It gets built, from the body up.
