Nourish Your Nervous System
A holistic guide to sustainable nervous system regulation and healing.
You’re not healing to become whole. You’re healing in wholeness.
Somewhere along the way, most of us picked up some version of this belief:
“If I just find the right ______, then I’ll be well.”
The right diet. The right supplement. The right practitioner, the right diagnosis, the right number on the scale, the right relationship. The list goes on forever.
I spent over a decade on what I now call the Hamster Wheel of Wellness, searching for the Holy Grail of Health. I’ve watched hundreds of women do the same.
Here’s what I finally understood. You can’t split yourself into symptoms and heal them one at a time. Your body, mind, emotions, spirit, relationships, and ancestry are all connected. Trauma leaves you undernourished in every one of them, so that’s where healing has to happen too.
There is nothing wrong with you if your nervous system is dysregulated.
It’s the genius of your body to protect you. The sensations and symptoms that make you believe something is broken are signs your body is doing something right. She’s speaking to you, and her language is sensation.
The spider and the web
A few summers ago, walking in the woods with our dog, I came around a corner and stopped dead. The sun was backlighting the tiniest web I’d ever seen, with a spider the size of a pinhead still spinning it.
Then the dog’s tail brushed an anchor thread. The spider dropped, hung for a split second, then climbed straight back to the center of her web and sat still, waiting for the danger to pass.
A web is a spider’s only way to feed herself. But before it could nourish her, she had built a safe place in the middle to come back to.
That’s the work. To consciously weave a nourishing life, anchored in every part of who you are, with a safe place inside that you can always come back to when something touches the web.
What’s inside
A full-length book, not a short PDF of bullet points. 15 chapters, in writing and in my own voice: I read the audiobook myself. Read it with a cup of tea, listen to it on a walk, and start with whichever thread feels most frayed.
The foundation
Understanding your body.
- Why there is no “right ______”
- How your nervous system actually works, in plain language
- How to recognize when it’s been running in survival mode for years
- What trauma does to the brain and the body
- Somatic Listening: a step-by-step practice for hearing what your body is trying to tell you
The threads of your web
8 ways to nourish your whole self.
- Physical. Sleep, food, movement, and your environment.
- Pleasure. Re-orienting toward what feels good.
- Spiritual. What’s nourishing, and what never was.
- Mental. The voice in your head and the stories it tells.
- Relational. Real community versus a comments section.
- Reciprocity. Relationships where nobody only gives.
- Ancestral. The survival patterns you inherited.
- Emotional. Including anger, which is not bad or wrong.
And the point of it all
Where it’s all headed.
- Authenticity is the entire point. You know it by how it feels, because inauthenticity feels like shit.
- The questions I get asked most, like how to tell intuition from fear, how to stop a shame cycle, and whether you can heal while you’re still in a hard environment
- Resources and a full bibliography, if you want to go deeper
It’s full of my own life, because that’s where I learned all of it. Leaving evangelical Christianity. My Memaw, who washed and folded her aluminum foil long after she didn’t have to. Painting every wall in my dream home white and gray for 9 years in case I had to sell it. And the year-long sensual movement class I signed up for when my body finally told me what it wanted.
What it looks like on the other side
Not a magical state where nothing ever activates you again. Nourished isn’t a destination. It looks more like this.
Your body sends you a signal, and you listen to her before you go looking for the next right ______ to fix it.
Someone sighs across the table, the voice in your head starts writing a story about it, and you notice the story before you pick a fight over it.
You catch your grandmother’s scarcity running your choices, and you get to decide whether to keep it.
You stop calling your adaptations “just my personality.”
You paint the wall the color you actually want.
And when something grazes your web, you have somewhere inside to go back to.
What this isn’t
- Another “right ______.” No protocol, no supplement stack, no 30-day reset.
- A replacement for care from your own doctor or therapist.
- Something to finish in a weekend. It’s meant to be lived with.
“In short, this is a book that anyone with a body needs to read, especially if you’ve ever experienced confusing sensations, feelings, or emotions. Lindsey is part mentor, part friend, and part sister who will walk beside you as you work to discern and understand yourself more deeply. For beginners to nervous system regulation, this book provides accessibility. Lindsey has a way of explaining complex concepts without sacrificing nuance. If you’ve been a student of somatic healing, you will find kinship and belonging in these pages. Her approach to this work feels balanced. Curiosity meets practicality. Constriction is met with awareness. Spirit meets science. And above all, trauma is met with love.”
