Bonus 32: Lifestyle Inflammation & Reciprocal Relationships with Kat Lee (part 2)

This is part 2 of my spontaneous conversation with my friend and colleague Kat Lee.

We talk about lifestyle inflammation and the role of non-reciprocal relationships in lifestyle inflammation.

Reciprocity in relationships means no one is ever giving without receiving. There’s always enough, even if you don’t have a spoken arrangement around what each person brings to the relationship.

We have relationships with humans and other-than-humans whether we’re conscious of those relationships or not (ie. most people aren’t conscious of their relationship to land).

When a relationship isn’t reciprocal, it’s unbalanced and exploitative. Our nervous systems will not and cannot feel safe and trusting in exploitative relationships — whether that’s with a partner or a job or the land.

This conversation is an invitation: where are you taking without giving something in return? Where are you giving but not receiving?

What is your relationship with Earth, with land and water, with animals and plants, with humans? Is it exploitative, where you take more than you need? Is it reciprocal where you’re giving and receiving?

Look for where reciprocity isn’t present and you’ll find where your nervous system is sounding the alarm. Create and foster reciprocity and you create and foster safety.
